 Alex Vedrinski
“When somebody calls me a turkey, I consider that a compliment,” said Alex Vedrinski. It’s that attitude, eight Ohio state, two grand national and one world championship gobbling titles that has Vedrinski taking pride in being called a turkey. The gobbling guru will present two seminars at the Northeast Ohio Sportsman Show and promises to leave audience members entertained and educated.

“There’s a lot of people throughout the industry who can mimic the sounds but there are not a lot of people who can gobble with their natural voice without using some kind of device,” Vedrinski stated. “When they leave that seminar, I want them to say, ‘I’ve never seen a seminar like that before.’ I try to keep it really fun, entertaining and interesting. In this day and age, education is probably the most important thing in hunting or any sport. We owe it to the wildlife to do it the right way,” said Vedrinski, who presents other wildlife seminars.

Outside of the competitive gobbling arena, the Streetsboro, Ohio man, co-owner of Chestnut Ridge Wild Turkey Calls, is a well-known hunting guide who has led groups as far away as Colorado and Maine. Whether it’s moose, bear or elk, Vedrinski knows the outdoors and what makes big game do what they do. He will share his big game knowledge in a rut hunting seminar that he affectionately entitles: “Rut Hunting for Anything That’s in Love.”

“I will share with them techniques and why they do what they do, and anything hunters need to do to be successful during the rut,” he explained.

While Vedrinski spends the majority of his time in the outdoors, he confesses to not guiding many turkey hunts. “I enjoy turkey hunting myself too much, and I don’t want to give my time up.”

It’s that love for the sport that began nearly 30 years ago when he started turkey hunting and gobbling.

“I am fortunate to gobble with my natural voice,” he said.

For the last 20 years, Vedrinski has gobbled competitively in state, national and world gobbling contests and also during his seminars. While he does not teach audiences how to gobble with their natural voice, Vedrinski’s turkey hunting seminar instructs hunters how to make turkeys gobble and locate the feathered prey in the wild.

As the popularity of turkey hunting continues to increase, more hunters are learning first hand the challenge of turkey hunting and that is leading more people to gobbling.

“For me, turkey hunting is more challenging than deer hunting. There’s a lot of people who hunt deer but there’s not many people who are deer hunters. Turkey hunters need to know the terrain and mimic the sounds and call them. It’s a little more challenging.”

Looking ahead to the January sportsman show, Vedrinski remarked, “I’m 58 years old and where else but in America can I go out and make people laugh and go through gyrations and gobble on the stage. You can’t do that in Russia.”

With a guarantee like that, who won’t want to attend the gobbling champ’s seminars.

Northeast Ohio Sportsman Show
Imagine a gathering of over 100 sporting goods vendors, seminars taught by nationally-known experts and an opportunity to gather during January to revel in the outdoors and everything it has to offer. That is what will take place on Jan 22nd and 23rd, 2010, as the Northeast Ohio Sportsman Show opens its doors to outdoorsmen and women in the new Buckeye Expo facility in Dalton. “This is going to be the ultimate sportsman show and we’re already looking forward to it,” stated Wayne Miller, owner of Kidron Sports Center, and sponsor of the Northeast Ohio Sportsman Show. Vendors and seminars will reflect all types of outdoor activities, with a large emphasis on hunting and fishing. Miller said, “We hope to have a huge turnout, with more than 100 vendors and all the hunting or sporting gear you can imagine on display. Everything from guns, rifles, and muzzleloaders, to ATVs, and archery, you name it, we’ll have it. We’ll offer seminars and workshops, and we’re going to have some TV personalities and celebrities there as well.”

With more events and personalities being added daily, world champion gobbler calling and outdoor expert Alex Vedrinski, have signed on to be in attendance.

Other seminars will focus on bass and walleye fishing, trapping, rut hunting, predator calling and outdoor survival.

Inside the the newly constructed Buckeye Expo building, ample room will be available within the complex to allow sportsman show attendees to move around and comfortably spend time with vendors and enjoy the show. Vendors will showcase their products and provide door prizes. Miller noted that door prizes will be given away throughout both days.

Raffle tickets for “big ticket items” will also be available for purchase. All the profits from the raffle will be donated to local charities.

Sporting goods vendors interested in having a booth at the Jan. 22nd and 23rd show in Dalton are urged to call 740-397-7788 to reserve a space.
